About us

The Jagiellonian Centre for Research on the Berlin Collections is an extra-faculty unit of the Jagiellonian University, established on the initiative of the Faculty of Philology and the Jagiellonian Library.

The Centre’s goal is to initiate, conduct, and coordinate interdisciplinary research on the Berlin Collections held in the Jagiellonian Library, as well as on the other manuscript holdings of the Library. Its research activities are closely linked with efforts to advance digitisation and the development of the Jagiellonian University’s digital infrastructure.

The Centre’s activities aim to continue, develop, and expand the scholarly, digitisation, and outreach efforts initiated within the Flagship Project European Heritage in the Jagiellonian Library: Digital Authoring of the Berlin Heritage (DiHeLib) — carried out under the Strategic Programme Excellence Initiative — Research University.

In particular, the Centre’s tasks include:

  • conducting interdisciplinary research and coordinating research projects concerning the Berlin Collections and other manuscript holdings of the Jagiellonian Library;
  • disseminating knowledge about the Berlin Collections and their importance for global cultural heritage, both in Poland and abroad;
  • integrating the research conducted at the Jagiellonian University through the further development of the interdisciplinary research ecosystem created within the DiHeLib Project;
  • undertaking research and development activities aimed at creating modern tools for the digitisation of manuscript cultural heritage and at developing the infrastructure of the Jagiellonian Library;
  • organising national and international conferences, seminars, summer schools, and workshops, as well as supporting the participation of affiliated researchers in similar initiatives;
  • carrying out educational activities;
  • cooperating with research institutions and social and cultural partners, in particular with national and international libraries and archives, as well as with entities from the broader socio-economic environment;
  • obtaining funding from national and international sources, also for the development of the technological and digital infrastructure of the Jagiellonian University.

The Jagiellonian Centre for Research on the Berlin Collections was established in December 2025 by an order of the Rector of the Jagiellonian University.
